NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon has revealed a conversation he had with a Hollywood legend about the possibility of a Days of Thunder sequel.

Gordon has known Tom Cruise, the star of the 1990 original, for some time, and revealed after Sunday's Cup Series race at Martinsville that Cruise told him that a follow-up to the big budget blockbuster 'is going to happen'.

Days of Thunder wasn't brilliantly received by critics at release, but has a heavy dose of nostalgia value – and it's impossible to say that Cruise and the production crew didn't go well out of their way to do their research.

The idea of a sequel has been kicked around for some time, with Cruise's success revisiting Top Gun and the success of the recent F1 movie serving to increase the clamour for a Days of Thunder 2 (not, presumably, called Weeks of Thunder, because that would be stupid).

Gordon: Cruise told me Days of Thunder 2 will happen

Reports emerged recently that a Hollywood screenwriter has been talking to NASCAR drivers to do some research as chatter about a new entry in Cruise's filmography continues, and Gordon was asked if he'd heard anything new about the rumored project.

"Yeah, I don’t have any new updates or insight," he said. "I mean, I just assume that whatever was taking place was building a storyline or some characters, something to go do maybe some sort of a pitch to some studios or whoever.

"I don’t really know a whole lot more other than that. I’m certainly optimistic and hopeful. I saw Tom one or two years ago. He actually brought it up then. We were just laughing bit. He said, 'No, I’m serious, this is going to happen'.

"When Tom Cruise says that, you take it serious. That would be exciting to see the sport to be able to be a part of that."
