NASCAR Results Today: Daniel Suarez takes stunning, emotional win at rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600

The Coca-Cola 600 started and ended with tributes to Kyle Busch. Nothing else would have felt right.

The race began with speeches and displays in Busch's memory, and finished with Daniel Suarez – one of his former team-mates, one of his former KBM drivers, and a man who Busch mentored through his early years in the sport and the country – snatching an astonishing victory out of apparently nowhere.

An emotional Suarez pointed to his Busch tribute No. 8 hat and then to the skies upon climbing out of his car, and said: "Kyle, he was special. This one is for Kyle, for Samantha, for Brexton, for Lennix, and for all his family."

Sunny afternoon skies turned into late night rain at Charlotte, ending the race 26 laps early after a series of cautions and restarts, and even a short red flag period. It was during one of those late-race cautions that Suarez's crew chief Ryan Sparks opted for a two-tire stop to leap 13 places to the lead.

That bold decision won the No. 7 car the race, but not before a pair of absolutely masterful restarts from Suarez (assisted by some pushes from Kyle Larson) to hold off a train of much faster Toyotas just long enough for the heavens to open over Charlotte Motor Speedway and end the race for good.

Racing 38 other drivers is hard enough over 600 gruelling miles, but everyone at the track was forced to race Mother Nature too – with the second half of the race being run until the very real threat of impending rain, with teams having to plan for the fact that a shower could effectively end the race at any moment.

Until Sparks' bold call in the final stages, the story of the day looked like being the astonishing pace of the quartet of Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas, who took an incredibly rare 1-2-3-4 finish in Stage 3.

Tyler Reddick and Kyle Larson were the only drivers able to match the pace of the JGR trio for the majority of the race, with Shane van Gisbergen occasionally making it up top to chop it up with them in perhaps his most impressively complete oval performance to date.

Down at the back of the field, Katherine Legge came home 12 laps down to complete his historic Double Duty run. After getting caught up in a wreck early at the Indy 500, the British driver fared better in Charlotte – although she did lose some ground when she lost a front-right tire after a pit stop. Oops.
