The Daytona 500 is the biggest and best race on the NASCAR schedule and therefore everybody wants to win it.
The 68th edition of The Great American Race takes place at Daytona International Speedway this Sunday (2:30pm ET), with over 40 drivers looking to etch their name into the history books by taking the victory.
Of course, being NASCAR's crown jewel event, winning is far from easy. The race sees the drivers cover 500 miles of asphalt over 200 laps, and to win it, they must first make it to the end. That, however, isn't as straightforward as it sounds, with superspeedway racing notorious for big wrecks.
Since 1959, just 43 drivers have become Daytona 500 winners, with Richard Petty the most successful of them all, taking the victory in the event on seven occasions.
Cale Yarborough follows him in second with four wins, whilst Bobby Allison, Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett and current Cup Series star Denny Hamlin all have three victories.
In terms of organizations, Hendrick Motorsports is the most successful team ever in the event with 10 victories, just edging Petty Enterprises, who have nine.
