Carson Hocevar might be controversial, but he has a huge future ahead of him in the NASCAR Cup Series.

That was evidenced once again at the Daytona 500 on Sunday, where the Portage, Michigan native led when the white flag was waved to signal the final lap.

Unfortunately for Hocevar, just seconds later, he was wrecked from behind, with Erik Jones in the No. 43 having given his No. 77 a bump at an angle, sending Hocevar into the wall.

Now, the 23-year-old has confirmed that he had no team radio for the final three laps of The Great American Race, making his ability to get to the front and come so close to victory all the more impressive.

Carson Hocevar lost radio at Daytona 500

Hocevar made the reveal when speaking on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio this week, and then confirmed that it was a 'true story' on X.

Hocevar Daytona 500 reaction

Post-race at Daytona, Hocevar cut a dejected figure, and this was how he saw the ending that saw his hopes of winning The Great American Race dashed (for now).

“I don't really know what happened other than I felt like I got a good shot in the rear, but they're a little offset,” a dejected Hocevar told FOX Sports live on air.

“I was just trying to get our lane rolling, but yeah, really proud of these guys. At least there wasn't a tire or a motor or some other freak deal, so I go to bed tonight knowing that, and knowing I don’t know what I would really do different.

“I was just really proud of our effort and our car and felt like we could push no matter who it was to lead and go forward, and then kind of run lanes, but I was a lot better pushing.

“So just felt like we're gonna be in [with] a good shot and felt really good about today, and it was so close.”
