NASCAR driver Rajah Caruth admitted he is heartbroken after failing to make it to the Championship 4 in the Truck Series.
Heading into Friday night's elimination race at Martinsville, Caruth looked in a good position to progress, sitting second in the playoff standings and above the cutoff line by 14 points.
However, Caruth's championship hopes were dealt a cruel and fatal blow on lap 73, with Caruth and Kaden Honeycutt making slight contact and rubbing up against each other's trucks in turn four.
This had devastating consequences for Caruth, with the contact cutting and flattening his left rear tire, causing him to spin in turn one and smash into the SAFER barrier, causing major damage to the front-left of his No. 71 Chevrolet truck.
Rajah Caruth heartbroken after playoff exit
Despite his best efforts to get going again, the damage was too much, with Caruth forced to reluctantly retire from the race, knowing that in doing so, he was no longer in contention to advance to Phoenix.
Offering a brutally honest reaction having been seen, evaluated, and released from the infield care center, Caruth admitted: “Definitely heartbroken, for sure.
“It’d be different if it was something that I did, if I messed up, but it was pretty much out of my control. Definitely a heartbreaker.”
Reflecting further on the incident, Caruth also told media: “Just tight racing with steel bodies and stuff you can’t really rub.
"You’ll cut a tire, and as soon as it cut, it was on the rim, so I kind of was just out of control.
"So not anything deliberate obviously, just things happen, and hate I was on the bad end of it.”
Exciting 2026 plans
Caruth now heads into his last weekend as a full-time Truck Series driver at Phoenix knowing he can't win the title, but there is exciting times ahead.
This week, the Hendrick Cars-backed driver announced he plans to compete full-time in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (currently the Xfinity Series) in 2026.
When doing so, he'll be driving a split schedule with both JR Motorsports and Jordan Anderson Racing.
