NASCAR star William Byron has locked himself into the Championship 4 after winning the Cup Series elimination race at Martinsville Speedway.

The Hendrick Motorsports star headed into the weekend knowing only a win was good enough to keep his championship hopes alive, and after taking pole position on Saturday, he converted it into the much-needed victory after 500 laps on Sunday.

The key moment for Byron came with 43 laps to go, making an aggressive pass on Team Penske's Ryan Blaney, who also needed the victory to progress. Having started 31st, it was an incredible drive from the 2023 champion, but second place was not good enough, ending his hopes of a second Cup Series title win this season.

With Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe and now Byron advancing to the Championship 4 with their wins at Las Vegas, Talladega and Martinsville, one spot in the Championship 4 remained up for grabs via points.

Christopher Bell headed into the race on Sunday one point above Kyle Larson, plus 37 and 36 points to the cutoff line, respectively. However, come the checkered flag, Larson led Bell by seven points in the standings, meaning he joins the title battle at Phoenix at the Joe Gibbs Racing star's expense.

Joining Blaney and Bell in being eliminated from championship contention at Martinsville were reigning champion Joey Logano and Chase Elliott, both of whom also found themselves in must-win situations heading into Sunday's race.
