If you thought the NASCAR fun police might call foul after Carson Hocevar’s crazy Talladega celebration on Sunday, you’d be wrong.
The 23-year-old from Portage, Michigan has become the biggest sensation in the sport, roaring into the Cup Series like a breath of fresh air.
While the young man they call ‘Hurricane’ may rile up some of his rival drivers, Hocevar is building quite the fanbase, and taking NASCAR to new places.

On Sunday down in Alabama, one of the sport’s most iconic tracks got an iconic moment as Carson claimed his first ever Cup Series victory. A moment which came AFTER the checkered flag.
Once Hocevar had beaten out Chris Buescher to win by just 0.114 seconds, he embarked on a victory lap which created news headlines around the world and a truly viral sporting moment.

Hocevar CRASHES on victory lap
Things were wild enough as Hocevar hung out of the window of his No. 77 Chevrolet and steered it around the famous oval while the fans cheered wildly. But then it got even crazier as he steered it straight into a wall. Yep, he crashed on the victory lap.
Now in days gone by maybe we would have had some form of sanction from the brass in Charlotte, or a ban of this ever being repeated, but it appears we have a new NASCAR in 2026. And the fun may well be back.
Instead of putting a stop to this coolest of celebrations, new NASCAR President Steve O’Donnell, only in the hot seat after taking over from the departing Jim France a couple of days ago, actively embraced it. He told Hocevar during the postrace press conference: “I’m good with it”.
Hocevar is making NASCAR cool again
So there you have it, this was not the first and last time we may see ‘Hurricane’ celebrate in such a way. He’s free to do it again, all he needs to do is win some more races.
NASCAR clearly gets that Hocevar is its ticket to national sporting relevance, so why not embrace it. He produced a moment worthy of SportsCenter or any sports bulletin across the nation. Maybe he’ll have Madison Avenue hanging on his every move soon enough.
It’s been a wild ride so far, and we can only hope for more. Buckle up, NASCAR fans.
