Cleetus McFarland was quick to pay tribute to the influence of his mentor and NASCAR legend Greg Biffle after a career-best finish at Rockingham Speedway this past weekend.
It was a huge few days for the YouTube star and racer at Rockingham, competing in both the ARCA Menards Series East event and making his Richard Childress Racing debut in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series.
While his run out in O'Reilly was tough, he did manage to finish the race, ending up in 32nd position, and in his ARCA East outing, he achieved a career-best result, coming home in fourth.
McFarland's delight was clear to see when he got out of No. 30 Ford, but when speaking to the media on the frontstretch, there was one man in particular he wanted to give a shoutout.
NASCAR TODAY: Cleetus McFarland doubts emerge as YouTube star makes brutally honest admission
Cleetus McFarland pays tribute to Greg Biffle influence
Prior to Biffle's tragic death in December, he was good friends with McFarland and acted as a mentor for him as he pursued his racing dream, and post-race, Cleetus made it clear that he continues to have a big influence when he's inside the race car.
“I just went out there and turned left for Greg Biffle,” McFarland told FloRacing live on the frontstretch. “That's what I was doing.
“I had more confidence today than I've ever had in a stock car, even though I got the world against me, I got all these people here [the crowd] rooting for me and I don’t know, I was feeling good.
“The Kenetik Rette Jones Racing [No.] 30 was just turning so good. I mean, I had the leaders in my sight the whole time. I was a little off pace, but like top four, I can't believe it. I'm fired up.”
McFarland: Biffle didn't teach me dumb stuff
Turning back to Biffle, Cleetus revealed what he thinks the NASCAR legend would have been saying to him had he been at the race track.
“Oh, I think he'd be happy I didn't do anything stupid,” he continued.
“Biff didn’t teach me dumb stuff, so I didn't do any dumb stuff today. I tried to use everything he's ever taught me, and I learnt a lot from Richard Childress Racing already.”
