You get them, we get them, even NASCAR legends like Dale Earnhardt Jr get them - spam callers are just the worst.
You spot numbers you don’t know calling your phone, texting you. Often with the wildest offers that cannot possibly be true. And of course they are not.
This week the topic came up during Dale Jr’s latest podcast, and he told his fellow hosts that he actually likes to engage with the spammers now and again - just for the sheer hell of it.
Now we should say first that Earnhardt gets a ton of these calls for one very bad reason, a reason everybody out there should take note of.
He explained: “I get a lot of calls, apparently whoever had my number before, let it out there. It’s always like ‘potential spam, potential spam’.”
The result is a tidal wave of spammers making contact with Dale Jr, and some of them actually get a response instead of an immediate block. Because Earnhardt loves to have a little fun with them first.
Dale Jr trolls the spammers
“Every now and again I’ll have a wild hair and answer, just to F with ‘em. ‘I wanna give you a cash offer on this property’, and it’s like a property that I don’t own.
“I get text messages about the cash offer on the house and I’ll write em back. I’ll be like: ‘naw man, that ain’t gonna be enough, tell ya what, $5million’. I’ll start haggling.”
While on the topic of phone nightmares, Dale Jr gave his take on another misery that afflicts most of us at some stage - changing a phone number.
“Changing your phone number is like a massive, permanent vacation. That first day of changing your number is such a badass feeling cos no one has it. ‘I’m shut off from
the whole world, this is awesome!’
“Then your dumb ass starts handing it back out and you kinda get back to where you are.”
