New NASCAR All-Star Race, new problems? Sunday's million dollar event was predictably chaotic as teams spent the first 150 laps fighting just for the right to be involved in the final 200-lap shootout, and...yes, that indirectly resulted in some penalties.
However! We'll never know about most of them, because the penalty report actually released by NASCAR only counts the 200-lap shootout at the end, the 'true' All-Star Race.
Did Kyle Larson pick up any penalties when his car was in the garage area after a Lap 2 crash in the first segment of the race? History will never know! (History will know that he officially ended up 26th out of 26 cars anyway, his race ending with just 134 of 200 laps completed in the final shootout)
Larson ended up getting dinged a couple of times in the race proper, first for speeding on pit road when the competition caution came out and then for pitting before pit road was open. That second one didn't matter a jot, as his race was over.
Connor Zilisch also got sent to the rear of the field for 'equipment interference' during that competition caution, having been running second at the time (he still rallied to finish fifth).
Elsewhere at Dover, a couple of other in-race penalties were also issued for various infractions, including;
- Speeding on pit road
- Commitment line violation
- Safety violation
- Too many crewmember(s) in contact with the pit service area
Post-race, all cars cleared technical inspection, meaning Denny Hamlin's second All-Star Race win was made official. No cars will be taken back to NASCAR's R&D Center for further inspection this week.
