Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen was plenty dramatic on the track, but gave officials relatively few headaches when it came to handing down penalties.
In fact, there were only five over the 100-lap distance – and with the way his luck's going, is it any surprise that two of them were against Joey Logano?
Both of Logano's penalties were related to the incident that effectively ended his competitiveness for the day, his front left tire completely disintegrating and leaving a large potion of the carcass on the track to bring out a caution.
That led to a penalty for pitting before pit road was open under that caution, before another for 'Too many crewmember(s) in contact with pit service area'. Logano finished 38th, running 15 laps down.
Elsewhere at Watkins Glen, a couple of other in-race penalties were also issued for various infractions, including;
- Speeding on pit road
- Crewmember(s) over the wall too soon
Post-race, all cars cleared technical inspection, meaning Shane van Gisbergen's first Cup Series win of the year was made official. Chris Buescher and Connor Zilisch's cars will be taken back to NASCAR's R&D Center for further inspection this week.
