NASCAR star Denny Hamlin has revealed why he chooses not to look at 23XI Racing's setup data ahead of a Cup Series race weekend.

Hamlin is in a unique position in the sport, given that he is the co-owner of one Cup Series team, 23XI, but drives for one of their competitors, Joe Gibbs Racing.

Despite racing each other for wins, though, the two teams have had a technical alliance since 23XI was founded in 2020, and this has been a hot topic of discussion of late.

23XI has so far dominated the season, with Tyler Reddick winning four of the opening six races, but the two organizations have access to the same data and technical information, so there is curiosity as to why the more established team in Joe Gibbs Racing is not the one winning a bunch of races right now.

Denny Hamlin on using 23XI data

Hamlin spoke about the topic on his Actions Detrimental podcast this week, revealing how the two teams end up in different places with their setups for a race weekend despite starting out at the same point, and having access to each other's setup path.

However, Hamlin also revealed that he doesn't look at 23XI's setups ahead of an event, and only sometimes looks at them afterwards, due to having confidence in his own ability to get what he needs out of his car at any given track.

“I don’t look at setup sheets or anything like that,” Hamlin said on Actions Detrimental.

“It’s always different for every team, certainly on any given week. I don’t have time to then, ‘Alright, I’ve locked in my setup, let me see what other people have come up with.’

I have done it post-race before and said, ‘Okay, that person was successful with that. Let me run that. Let me see what that feels like.’

"That probably will happen today [after Reddick's win at Darlington], but generally speaking, I just focus on what I need because at so many of these racetracks, I have a really good understanding of the feel that I need in my car to go win.”
