Katherine Legge's attempt at completing the Indy 500 and Coca Cola 600 double is over after just 18 laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Legge, who races part-time in the NASCAR Cup and O'Reilly Series, was hoping to become only the second driver to complete all laps in both events on Sunday, following in the footsteps of Tony Stewart, the only driver to ever do so.

Reigning Cup Series champion Kyle Larson tried and failed in the last two years, and Legge has become the latest NASCAR driver to fall short of the grueling achievement.

She did so in a somewhat heroic self-sacrifice, though, swerving and putting her own car into the wall as she tried to avoid the spinning Ryan Hunter-Reay. Had Legge not swerved, it could have been a very nasty accident.

Hunter-Reay and Legge have both since been seen and released from the infield medical center.
