Kyle Busch has opened up on the injury which saw him miss months of his 2015 championship season.

The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion was taking part in an Xfinity Series race the day before the season-opening Daytona 500 when he got caught in a big wreck with just a handful of laps to go.

The wreck left Busch with a double compound fracture of his right leg and a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot after he hit a section of concrete wall unprotected by tire packs, where the SAFER barrier was not installed. The impact measured at around 90G.

In an interview with Sean Hannity released this week, Busch discussed the moment of injury and revealed that the compression of the car was so sudden and severe that his leg was broken by his own in-car equipment.

Busch reveals cause of double leg break

He explained to the long-time Fox News presenter: “So when I hit the wall, and everything was crunching and coming back to me, the throttle pedal – we always had a throttle stop.

“When the engine compressed back and hit that throttle stop, it came back so far that it hit my gas pedal while I was off the gas pedal. It hit the gas pedal so fast and so hard that my foot was resting right next to it – it smacked my leg and broke my leg.”

Busch admitted during the season that, at the moment of impact, he wondered whether or not his career was over. Astonishingly, not only did he come back inside the first half of the season, but he put up five wins and three second place finishes to secure his first Cup title.

Busch: I felt my right leg dangling

That moment of impact, however, was described in harrowing terms on Hannity's podcast this week.

“I already knew my right leg, because I felt it, it was just dangling, like there’s nothing there. And so I go to push with my left foot, and I’m like, ah, okay, my left foot’s broken too. So I basically had to pull myself up and out of the seat with just my arms.

“I was telling the guy, ‘Hey, my legs are broke'. And he’s like, ‘What?’ And I’m like, ‘My legs are broke’. And he goes – so then he was like, ‘Okay, we’re gonna need more help here'.”
