NASCAR stars Kyle Larson and Carson Hocevar among drivers hit with penalties at Mexico City

Another weekend of NASCAR Cup Series action is in the books following Sunday's Viva Mexico 250 in Mexico City.

In the Cup Series' first international points-paying race in NASCAR's modern era, road course specialist Shane van Gisbergen ran out as the winner, locking himself into the playoffs having finished over 16 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Christopher Bell.

Whilst a new track no doubt kept the drivers on their toes, the officials were alert throughout too, with 16 penalties dished out during Sunday's race.

The first of these came before the action had even begun, with Noah Gragson hit with a tail end penalty and sent to the rear of the field pre-race for using a backup car after he was involved in a crash in practice.

As always, the most common infraction during Sunday's race was 'pitting before pit road is open', with 10 tail end penalties handed out to drivers for this, including Kyle Larson, Kyle Busch and Carson Hocevar. Six of these came on lap 7 after a wreck involving six drivers.

Elsewhere in Mexico City, Zane Smith was hit with a stop-and-go penalty on lap 10 for a DVP violation, whilst Brad Keselowski was given the same punishment for shortcutting the course on lap 72.

Other infractions hit with penalties by race officials included driving through more than three pit boxes (Ryan Preece), Crewmember(s) over the wall too soon (Ricky Stenhouse Jr), and fueling as the free pass after the designated lap (Chase Briscoe).
