NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick hasn't lost an ounce of his racing instinct, as he showed when battling his son Keelan in a CARS Tour West race last week.

Father and son have raced together a number of times in the last year, but last weekend's action might just be the closest they've got – trading paint as they fought for the lead at Tucson Speedway.

Fortunately, neither driver wrecked, crossing the line first and second to take the chequered flag...with the former Cup Series champion taking the win in the CARS Tour West Pro Late Model class season opener.

The 13-year-old initiated the contact as they went toe-to-toe for the win, with the elder Harvick admitting that he briefly thought he'd wrecked his son.

Harvick: I'd have been fine wrecking my son

Speaking immediately after the finish, he said: "How fun is that! I thought I wrecked him there. I was going for the win and I knew I had it. I wasn't going to get pushed out of the way today! He tried to push me out of the way so I pushed him outta the way!"

He added later: "It got a bit physical. But I was like, ‘You know what buddy, you move me up, your maiden voyage is over and you’re going to get the bumper back'.

"So, I’m glad that he didn’t wreck, but I’d have been fine with that too today… it was fun, and hopefully the crowd enjoyed it.

"I had him the first time and we kind of got hung together there off of turn four. It shot me down the racetrack just a little bit…Then the second time I think he thought I was gonna roll the top and he tried to cross me over. When he didn’t get there and then he moved me in the next corner, it was game on."
