Joe Gibbs Racing has announced that one of its drivers will miss this weekend's race at Martinsville after developing 'concussion-like symptoms'.

William Sawalich was caught up in a big wreck at Talladega last weekend in the Xfinity Series playoff race, and went to a local hospital to be checked over after the race.

The teenager is now going through NASCAR's concussion protocols, which will see him miss at least this weekend's short-track race, and potentially next weekend's season finale at Phoenix.

Sawalich will be replaced by reigning Whelan Modified Tour champion and occasional Xfinity Series driver Justin Bonsignore, his eighth start of the season and his first in the No. 18.

Writing on social media, Sawalich said: "I’m disappointed to not be in the car this weekend, but my health is my number one priority. I’m feeling better every day and working with Dr. Collins at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and NASCAR to go through their concussion protocol to return to the track as soon as possible."

"Joe Gibbs Racing announced today that William Sawalich will miss Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Martinsville Speedway after experiencing concussion-like symptoms following his accident during last Saturday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.

"In his absence, Justin Bonsignore will drive the No. 18 SoundGear Toyota GR Supra this weekend."
