Christmas has come early for one NASCAR driver, with Patrick Staropoli having landed a full-time drive in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series next season.

Earlier this month, Nick Sanchez confirmed his shock exit from Big Machine Racing ahead of next season, having been informed by the team that he was no longer in their plans, despite making the playoffs last season.

Now, Big Machine Racing has confirmed that Staropoli, who is a Harvard University graduate, will replace Sanchez in the No. 48, set to pilot the car with backing from SYFOVRE.

Staropoli has previously completed nine NASCAR races in his career, with one outing in the Truck Series in 2016, followed by a further four in each of the Truck and Xfinity Series in 2025.

He has also accumulated 19 career starts in ARCA, all of which came while being a board-certified medical and surgical retina specialist.

Staropoli achieves life goal

Speaking as part of the team's official statement, the Florida native said it was a long-held goal to race full-time in NASCAR.

“From the moment I buckled into a pure stock at Hialeah Speedway in 2003, my life’s goal has been to compete at the top levels of this sport," Staropoli explained.

"The path has taken many unexpected turns, but after working every day for 23 years in pursuit of this dream, I now have the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to Scott Borchetta, Patrick Donahue, and Chevrolet.

"I am ready to do whatever it takes to put this SYFOVRE Chevy up front and raise awareness for Geographic Atrophy secondary to Age-Related Macular Degeneration by combining my passion for motorsports and medicine.”
