NASCAR Cup Series star Alex Bowman has revealed that he expects clarity on his Hendrick Motorsports future sooner rather than later.

The 33-year-old is in the final year of a three-year contract with the team and is the biggest domino left to fall in this year's free agency class, with some big names (Tyler Reddick at 23XI Racing, for one) wrapping up their business early.

The general consensus on Bowman is that Hendrick are likely to prefer him to other options on the market, as he's well-regarded within the team and has a good relationship with lead sponsor Ally Financial.

There have been, however, some questions about whether Bowman will want to continue in the sport. The eight-time Cup Series race winner has missed races in three of the last five seasons with health and injury issues (concussion and a broken back in the past, and a long-running bout of vertigo this year), and questions have been raised about whether he'll simply decide to call it a career after this season.

Hendrick star decision coming soon

Bowman was asked about his future on a media call this week and insisted that he's not thinking too much about it, saying: “I’m just trying to do my part to try to help (Hendrick Motorsports) be the best it can be right now and obviously trying to get things turned back around on the 48 side of things.

"But yeah, definitely not – I don’t feel like I’m racing for my job or anything like that by any means. Really just kind of week-to-week focused on trying to get pointing back in the right direction.”

He added: “It’s been interesting. Obviously, we’ve had a lot of different conversations and kind of trying to figure out what the best thing to do is, so I would say sooner rather than later, for sure. But really, I guess I haven’t really thought about (it).

"Like, it hasn’t been the first thing on my mind by any means, and really just been working hard at trying to get things pointed in the right direction. But definitely, (I) think sooner rather than later.”
