Carson Hocevar...might not have been at fault in a wreck that he was involved in?

That's what TV analyst and long-time NASCAR crew chief Steve Letarte thinks at least, after the No. 77 was widely blamed for spinning Denny Hamlin at Sonoma last weekend.

The incident ruined what looked like being a good points day for Hamlin – although he did pick up enough in 26th place to jump one point ahead of Tyler Reddick at the top of the standings – although he stopped short of outright blaming Hocevar himself, too.

Letarte broke down the incident on his NASCAR Inside the Race podcast this week, saying that if any blame was to be apportioned for the wreck, it should go to road course racing as a whole.

Letarte: Blame road course racing for Hamlin wreck

“Contact from Carson Hocevar spins round the No. 11," Letarte said. "The blame quickly gets pointed to Carson Hocevar. I think it's a little clearer to me that the blame is on other drivers and maybe just road course racing in general.

"Right here the No. 48 is giving a shove to the rear bumper of the No. 6, who then is going to give a little shove to the rear bumper of the No. 77 right there. It's kind of a four car train of pushing and shoving. The result? The No. 11 around off the front bumper of the No. 77.

"This wreck in general is basically the same as what you see on an interstate. When you hit the car in front of you, you get the speeding ticket, you get the infraction, and Carson Hocevar is gonna get the ticket here.

"So as much as the fan base wants to point the blame at someone, I think the blame really might go to road course racing in general.”

Hamlin, on his own podcast this week, had said of the incident: "They just kept shoving and, unfortunately, I got the worst end of it. I think that it’s always very easy to blame the car directly behind you and yes, Carson could have done a better job. But I don’t think that he came into the corner with reckless abandonment…In the end, I’m very comfortable in saying that wreck was a racing deal.”
