Denny Hamlin has confirmed that Corey Heim will change numbers for his first full-time season in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Heim currently runs in the No. 67 for 23XI Racing as a part-time entry, winning his second race in his last three starts on Sunday at the Brickyard 400, but his team co-owner confirmed that this year will be the last of the Truck Series champ with that number.

Instead, Heim will transition to the No. 35, currently run by soon-to-be-departed 23XI driver Riley Herbst, as Hamlin revealed on his Actions Detrimental podcast on Monday.

Hamlin explained that he had given Heim the choice of sticking with the No. 67 as he moves into a full-time role, but the 24-year-old turned it down.

Hamlin was succinct in explaining his driver's decision, saying: "He says it's a stupid, goofy number."

"I kinda like it...I don't know why," said Hamlin, as his co-host Jared Allen lamented the 6-7 meme ruining the number. "Listen, I gave him the choice, he wants 35."

The Joe Gibbs Racing star was then asked if that news was 'official' after he had hesitated to assign the No. 35 to Heim when he first signed his full-time deal, but confirmed: "No, it's official."

"It’s earned on their side and it’s on us as a team on the other side," Hamlin said of his team's young star after Indianapolis. "I don’t know. I’m sure maybe I could have done something different on the restart with the timing of it.

"Man, just getting a shove so early just didn’t allow me to get my car straight before taking off. Logano really timed the bump to the No. 67.

"I don’t know what we do different. We’re part of circumstances where the inside line didn’t get organized. Really proud of 23XI overall. That part-time effort that Bootie and Corey is putting together, most times they’re on the racetrack, they’re our fastest car. They’re doing a heck of a job. Definitely a well-deserved victory."
