Hollywood legend Kurt Russell has been confirmed as the honorary pace car driver for the 2026 Daytona 500.

The NASCAR Cup Series season-opening race is less than three weeks away, with just the pre-season Clash at Bowman Gray between now and the Great American Race.

The pace car driver has been a role filled by some huge stars in recent years, both physically (Alan Ritchson in 2024 and WWE superstar Big E in 2022) and in terms of fame (Peyton Manning, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Donald Trump in 2018, '19 and '20 respectively).

In a statement announcing the news, Russell said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be named the honorary pace car driver for this year’s Daytona 500. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel, it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a race car.”

Russell set for historic drive

Frank Kelleher, President of Daytona International Speedway, added: “The Daytona 500 has always been bigger than a race. It’s a global event that blends competition, spectacle, and culture.

"Kurt Russell’s impact in entertainment mirrors what makes the Great American Race special – moments that endure long after the checkered flag.”

Russell is currently promoting season two premiere of his Apple TV series 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters', which will be released from Friday February 27.

Daytona 500 date, start time and how to watch live
