A private jet linked to former NASCAR champion Greg Biffle has been involved in a devastating crash at Statesville Regional Airport, North Carolina.
The plane in question was a Cessna C550 business jet registered to GB Aviation Leasing, which multiple outlets have reported and business records show is a company managed by Biffle.
Initially, it is unclear whether or not Biffle - who raced over 500 times in the Cup Series and won championships in the Truck and Busch Series - was onboard the aircraft.
However, it has now been confirmed that Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma and son Ryder were among seven fatalities.
Plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport
The crash is reported to have occurred at approximately 10:15 am ET on Thursday morning at Statesville Regional Airport, which sits approximately 45 minutes north of Charlotte.
Flight tracking data available at FlightAware.com shows the plane took off from the airport at approximately 10:06 am ET. However, it then returned and attempted to land, which is when the fiery crash occurred.
An eyewitness who saw the aircraft returning told AP: “We were like, ‘Oh my gosh! That’s way too low. It was scary.”
Another eyewitness told The Athletic: “There was a big plume of black smoke, and I saw some fire trucks coming up. I didn’t hear anything, but I went across and the whole end of the runway was on fire.”
Families issue statement
A statement released by the families affected in the aftermath of the tragedy read: "We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones. This tragedy has left all of our families heartbroken beyond words.
"Greg and Cristina were devoted parents and active philanthropists whose lives were centered around their young son Ryder and Greg’s daughter Emma (mother – Nicole Lunders). Emma was a wonderful human being with a kind soul who was loved by many people. Ryder was an active, curious and infinitely joyful child.
"Dennis Dutton and his son Jack were deeply loved as well, and their loss is felt by all who knew them.
"Craig Wadsworth was beloved by many in the NASCAR community and will be missed by those who knew him.
"Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives. We ask for privacy, compassion and understanding as we grieve and begin to process this unimaginable loss. We are grateful for the kindness and support that has been extended to our families during this incredibly difficult time.
"At this moment, our focus is on honoring their lives and supporting one another."
