The latest latest high-profile lawsuit in NASCAR continues to drop daily bombs into the news agenda and Joe Gibbs Racing vs Chris Gabehart has now delivered another zinger.

We are now almost three months on from the moment the world went into meltdown as JGR filed that blockbuster suit following Gabehart’s mysterious offseason departure from the team.

As the dust settled on the Daytona 500, the suit claimed that Gabehart "embarked on a brazen scheme to steal JGR’s most sensitive information and use it for the benefit of a direct competitor in NASCAR - Spire Motorsports."

Gabehart, former crew chief for Denny Hamlin, denies any wrongdoing and initially dismissed the claims as 'baseless'. Following that, Spire Motorsports then confirmed his appointment as the organization’s Chief Motorsports Officer, and Joe Gibbs Racing subsequently added Spire's name to the lawsuit.

Joe Gibbs Racing also sought a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction that Gabehart must "cease and desist working or performing any services for Spire similar to those he provided to JGR for the 18 months following February 9, 2026”.

We now have a ruling on that, with Gabehart allowed to work for Spire, but NOT in a role similar to the one he performed at JGR. We also now have a fresh twist in the case which adds a new and particularly salty wrinkle to proceedings.

Are JGR trying to weaponize Spire success?

The answer to that question, would appear to be very much yes...

The latest filing from JGR - per NASCAR insider Jordan Bianchi - calls out Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson for a post which appears to brag about his team’s recent success.
It reads: “On April 27, 2026, Jeff Dickerson posted a document to his X account which purports to be an unfiled declaration, similar to those Spire has filed in this litigation. In the unfiled declaration, he appears to joke about the allegations in this lawsuit and brags about Spire’s first NASCAR Cup Series win since 2019 and second win ever. This sudden improvement in Spire’s Cup Series performance of course comes on the heels of Gabehart misappropriating JGR’s Confidential Information and Trade Secrets and providing Spire the same or similar services he provided JGR in the last year.”

That win Dickerson was referring to was Carson Hocevar's epic first Cup Series success at Talladega on April 26.

The case continues, with Gabehart now able to attend races and carry out duties for Spire - just not in the same way he did at JGR. This one still has a way to run.
