NASCAR's season-opening Clash at Bowman Gray is in doubt heading into this weekend.
The Winston-Salem area was hit with a snowstorm a week out from the event and, while conditions have cleared up and the Bowman Gray track cleared, another storm is expected to dump more snow on the area at the end of the week, with temperatures expected to be well below freezing.
While there is no mandated minimum temperature for a NASCAR race to be run, organizers appear to be taking the weather issues seriously, with executive VP Ben Kennedy posting updates from the track and area on social media.
Kennedy has posted openly about the possibility of 'schedule changes' for the weekend, while it has been suggested elsewhere that the race could be pushed back to next weekend – not usually an option for a postponed race, but one that the two-week gap between the Clash and Daytona 500 leaves theoretically open.
Just don't expect it to be run on the Sunday if it's postponed. There's a fairly big football game in Santa Clara that Fox are already broadcasting.
Will the NASCAR Clash be held this weekend?
Journalists have also been across the situation, with Bob Pockrass writing on Monday: "There are two things to consider – whether the road/parking lot infrastructure will be usable/safe as well as if there is too much moisture to race. Wouldn't rule out a decision before the weekend depending on the forecast (which could also impact any rescheduled date)."
Former NASCAR driver and current Fox commentator Clint Bowyer posted a couple of pictures from the area around the track, writing: "We got really lucky with weather here in Winston and the crew has done a great job doing as much as possible to be ready. Keep an eye on the forecast for the weekend and pray for the best."
The most recent update from Kennedy read as follows: "The track team has made progress on clearing the track. We’re monitoring one more snow storm arriving Friday evening/Saturday. Our goal is to host the Clash at Bowman Gray but we’ll communicate schedule changes as we learn more."
