One of the NASCAR drivers who battled COTA this past weekend has revealed an unusual tip he got once from a veteran star.
Sage Karam has raced part-time in the O'Reilly Series since 2021 and was back at COTA for his fifth race at the track in as many years – although suspension damage saw him drop out of the race in the final stage.
The weekend was marked by a number of drivers struggling with their cool suits failing, leaving them to bake in their cars in the 80-plus degree heat as they got hotter and hotter.
Kyle Larson, Ryan Preece, and AJ Allmendinger all suffered cool suit failures in Sunday's Cup Series race, with Larson's becoming obvious in the early stages before Preece and Allmendinger's were reported – with the latter also complaining that his helmet hose was blowing hot air.

Karam passes on cooling tip
Allmendinger was eventually helped from his car at the end of the race and placed on a stretcher for treatment, such were the severity of his issues. He was later released from the infield care center after evaluation.
Karam took to social media after the Cup race to share a (terrible) piece of advice he was once given by long-time NASCAR driver B.J. McLeod, essentially telling him to bulk up in order to cool down.
He wrote: "B.J. McLeod once told me at driver introductions when we were talking about cool suits “you need to put more meat on your bones. A bigger turkey takes longer to cook than a smaller turkey” lol never forgot that."
We're not medical experts here at Oval Insider, we just like cars. But we're still pretty sure that's not the lesson to take from roasting a turkey.
