NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. issued an apology on Saturday night after one of his drivers performed a burnout on the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway bricks.

Carson Kvapil ran out the winner in Saturday night's O'Reilly Series action at the Brickyard, taking his first race victory at this level and leading home a JR Motorsports one-two-three-four.

Burnouts are customary when celebrating a NASCAR victory, but Kvapil made an error in performing his over the yard of famous bricks on the track.

When Indianapolis Motor Speedway was originally built, its entire track surface was made up of bricks - hence the nickname The Brickyard - but after the surface was covered with asphalt over the years, all that remains of the original surface is a yard of bricks at the start/finish line.

Earnhardt Jr. and Kvapil address Indianapolis brick burnout

Drivers are told not to perform burnouts over them, such is their history, but it transpired that Kvapil had already unplugged his radio before getting that reminder following his win on Saturday evening.

"I looked at that about 20 minutes after the race, and I was like, uh, probably wasn't good," said Kvapil in the post-race press conference.

"I was unplugged [from the radio], so I have no idea if they said anything or not. Yeah, I made a little bit of a mistake there, probably."

After the race, nine Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials were seen attending to the bricks, with seven of them frantically trying to cleanse them of the rubber that had been laid down.

After images of that emerged on social media, Earnhardt Jr. issued an apology, confirming that Kvapil had indeed unplugged from the radio before receiving instructions not to perform the burnout in that area.

"Our apologies. The driver was unplugged from his radio when NASCAR sent the reminder. Lots going on when that all went down. Certainly regret any inconvenience," Earnhardt Jr. wrote on X.
