NASCAR Cup Series star Denny Hamlin has predicted a race ban for Xfinity Series driver Sam Mayer ahead of this weekend's action in Phoenix.
All three national NASCAR series are in action in Arizona this coming weekend, kicking off with the Truck Series on Friday night and culminating in Cup Series action on Sunday.
Of course, the Xfinity Series championship race will take place in between those on Saturday, but Hamlin believes that one of the drivers might be watching from the sidelines after his antics at Martinsville.
Denny Hamlin predicts race ban
The driver of the No. 41 Ford was still in the fight for the playoffs at this stage, entering Saturday's race -22 to the cutoff line.
Mayer and Jeb Burton battled hard throughout last weekend's race, with things kicking off when Mayer moved Burton out of the way to pass him early in the race.
Burton, furious at this, radioed that Mayer was 'done when I get to him', adding 'f*** him and his championship', and followed through on that promise in overtime, with Burton pushing Mayer out wide on the final lap to overtake him for sixth place.
Mayer sought immediate retaliation, wrecking Burton after the checkered flag and then going on a furious rant about his rival on pit road.
Hamlin does not believe NASCAR will take kindly to this, stating on his Actions Detrimental podcast: "Sam Mayer after the race, I don’t know what he was doing.
"That was a bad call, and I don’t know if he’s racing this weekend."
Asked if he should be racing this weekend, Hamlin added: "I wish I had a good answer for you...wrecking someone after the caution into the wall, no, probably not.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver concluded: "I didn’t have any issues with the back-and-forth on track until the checkered flag. And then in his interview, terrible; it just didn’t help.
"I’m not gonna pile on because I think he’s gonna have a bad week. It just didn’t help. What do you want me to say? I think he’s watching Phoenix.”
NASCAR set to investigate
NASCAR senior vice president of competition, Elton Sawyer, has confirmed that the series will not tolerate such incidents and that there is set to be a meeting to decide the next steps on Tuesday.
“Having (that) type of incident after the checkered flag, it’s just not something we’re going to tolerate,” Sawyer said Tuesday morning on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
“We’ll get with our team today, discuss it, and see what the next steps are.”
