A major NASCAR team has purchased a significant block of land near an iconic track, according to reports.

Hendrick Motorsports is one of the sport's most historic teams, and it has now added to its portfolio with a limited liability company associated with the team purchasing of 'about 20 acres' of land.

That land is in Concord, North Carolina, near the Charlotte Motor Speedway, with the company laying out $14.2 million to take control of it.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the company currently claims to have no plans for the land, nor another 2.6-acre plot recently purchased for $13 million.

Hendrick contract with ICE questioned

The company was in the news for non-racing reasons just last month, after signing a contract with the controversial U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE).

The deal was for Hendrick to supply ICE with 25 Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs back in August, with an authorization letter claiming: "Urgency is warranted as these vehicles must be deployed to the streets immediately to provide a visible law enforcement presence, support public safety operations, and reinforce recruitment efforts."

That purchase was called into question by some US Representatives, who questioned the lack of an open bidding process for the contract and pointed out that Rick Hendrick is a notable Republican donor.

Hendrick Motorsports, for their part, confirmed that Hendrick Motorsports Technical Solutions (a separate entity from the NASCAR team) sold the vehicles, saying: “Government entities purchase thousands of vehicles each year from a broad network of automotive dealers, and our organization has sold to federal, state, and local agencies for decades…

"We do not participate in or control how agencies equip, brand, or use vehicles after purchase."
