NASCAR Cup Series star Chase Elliott is officially the most popular driver in the sport, but one thing fans do at race weekends grosses him out.

During an event, NASCAR is one of the most accessible sports there is in terms of fans being able to meet their favorite drivers, with stars and their teams often holding autograph sessions, Q&As, and informal appearances in or around the track on any given race weekend.

No doubt the drivers love interacting with their biggest supporters, but Elliott says one particular thing about his encounters with fans is not exactly ideal.

Chase Elliott grossed out by NASCAR fans

Speaking to The Athletic in an interview that touched upon a wide range of topics, Elliott was quizzed on the pettiest thing that annoys him during a NASCAR race weekend, and his answer was clear.

"When people walk up to get you to sign something, and they stick their Sharpie in their mouth to open the cap, and then hand [the Sharpie] to you," he explained.

"I’m like, 'Ehhhhh…' That one always really … that’s a tough one.

"It happens a lot. And I’m like, 'Man, I have a Sharpie,' but the color I have is not sufficient, so then we’re grabbing a [different] one. That one for sure is not ideal."

Elliott being grossed out by this is understandable, but he must deal with it a lot, given his huge popularity.

Since 2018, Elliott has been named the most popular driver in the Cup Series every single season, and that will likely be the case once again when the 2026 announcement is made.

If you're set to meet Elliott at an upcoming race, keep the Sharpies out of your mouth!
