NASCAR Cup Series star Ryan Blaney is set to run a retro Daytona 500-winning paint scheme at Pocono Raceway, it has been revealed.

Team Penske made the announcement ahead of this weekend's race as part of their 60th anniversary celebrations, confirming that the driver of their No. 12 was set to run a scheme inspired by Ryan Newman's 2008 Daytona 500 win.

Newman, who also drove the No. 12 at Penske, finished ahead of the likes of Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch to win The Great American Race that year in a distinct blue paint scheme with two white stripes through the sides and rear quarter panel.

Blaney follows his Team Penske teammate Joey Logano in running a paint scheme that marks a big win in the team's history as part of their anniversary celebrations, with the No. 22 having run a red and white look inspired by Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat's 2019 Supercars victory in the Bathurst 1000 at Phoenix.

Ryan Blaney on running Ryan Newman paint scheme

“That win has a lot of history,” Blaney said on running the scheme, via NASCAR.com. “That paint scheme is very memorable. It’s one of my favorite paint schemes growing up. The Alltel scheme was really iconic.

"The blue is beautiful, and with the 60th anniversary of Penske, we’re really utilizing a lot of iconic wins for the organization.

"I had the pleasure to race with Ryan for a handful of years before he retired. He’s one of my favorite drivers to watch growing up and a heck of a competitor.

"We’re really honored to be able to run it this weekend at Pocono.”

Ryan Newman really proud

Elsewhere, Newman himself revealed he was proud to be a part of the team celebrating such a huge milestone.

“Throwback schemes have always been cool, but keeping it internally is a different kind of special,” Newman said.

“Really proud and honored to be a part of the history at Penske. Ryan and I have always had a good relationship.

"It’s cool to see the car go back in that livery at a track where we won our first race at.”
