NASCAR star Denny Hamlin's mother, Mary Lou, has passionately called for more fire department funding after experiencing family heartbreak at the end of 2025.
Tragically, Denny's parents' home in Gaston County, North Carolina, was engulfed in flames just days after Christmas last year, with Mary Lou and Dennis, Denny's father, suffering what were described as 'catastrophic' injuries having been inside at the time.
Sadly, Dennis would later succumb to those injuries, confirmed dead in the following statement on December 29.
"Firefighters were dispatched at 6:19 p.m. and arrived at 1137 Blacksnake Road at 6:27 p.m. to find a two-story home mostly engulfed, with flames showing through the entire attic," an official said in December.
"Outside the home were the residents, Dennis Hamlin, 75, and Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, who both suffered catastrophic injuries while escaping the flames. Gaston County Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) transported Dennis and Mary Lou to CaroMont Regional Medical Center.
"Dennis later died from his injuries at the hospital. Mary Lou was transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, where she is actively being treated."

Denny Hamlin's Mom calls for more fire funding
Thankfully, Mary Lou was able to survive her injuries after a prolonged recovery period, and she and Denny had a very special and emotional embrace together after the JGR star's win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway earlier this month.
Now, Mary Lou is calling for officials to give more funding to help people that find themselves in the situation she and her husband did, issuing a passionate statement to the Gaston County Board of Commissioners this week.
“Dec. 28 was one of the saddest days of my life,” an emotional Mary Lou Hamlin told the board, via WBTV. “It was the last time I saw my husband of 52 years, when I pulled him out of our burning home.
“I didn’t understand at the time that the fire trucks were there but not the water,” Hamlin continued. “There was no water to put out my house. I am advocating for funding to be included in this year’s budget. Training on emergency response, additional equipment, staffing ... are just a few of the things to help strengthen the fire protection in our area, in which funds are desperately needed.”
Mary Lou concluded: “I am hoping by doing this, no other family has to experience what we had to go through.
“Please, please, please help by including funds for your budget this year.”
Mary Lou was supported at the meeting by Denny's fiancée, Jordan Fish, and her daughter, Lisa Chapman, as well as local firefighters.
Things could have been saved
Chapman also spoke at the meeting, detailing her experience and the frustration of arriving to see very little could be done due to a lack of resources.
“There’s nothing worse than pulling up to the fire, to the house on fire, partially on fire, and seeing everybody standing in the road ... no water being thrown on the fire.
“I thought I was in shock ... When [Mary Lou] woke up, that was probably one of the first things she said, was there was no water thrown on the house.”
“At that time, the animals were still in there,” Chapman went on. “My dad was already gone, but there were things that could’ve been saved, but with no water, there wasn’t.”
