Ryan Blaney had a fantastic day in the NASCAR Cup Series at Phoenix on Sunday, right up until he landed himself in hot water with his wife, Gianna.

The Team Penske star took his first victory of the season at Phoenix Raceway, which also happens to be his first as a father.

Ryan and Gianna welcomed their first child into the world on November 17 last year, a baby son whom they named Charley Bennett Blaney.

Ryan Blaney in trouble with wife Gianna

The driver of the No. 12 Ford has previously discussed how becoming a father has changed his mentality, and following Sunday's race, he was asked if he had received a call or facetime from his wife and son, who were back home and not at the race track.

However, the question sparked something in Blaney's brain, and he realised he had forgotten to call them in Victory Lane.

"I’m sure I have [had a call from them]. I don’t have my phone with me. It’s in the bus," Blaney explained.

"You know what, you just reminded me. I’m in trouble. I forgot to FaceTime Gianna in Victory Lane. I’m going to load here when I get back to my phone. Just run back there really fast."

"Oh my God I’m in trouble. Yeah, cool. Just processing this," Blaney added, with the media room full of laughter.

Blaney: Seeing family changes everything

Blaney continued: "Yeah, I mean, it’s unfortunate they’re not here. Obviously it would have been cool to have Gianna and Charley here, just to be with them, have a photo.

"Looking forward to getting home tonight and seeing them. It just changes your perspective. Whenever I get home Sunday nights and see her and him, it just completely changes everything.

"For days like today, it’s just the cherry on top. Really, really lucky to have a healthy son and a healthy wife. Hopefully we can do it at some point where they’re here. Yeah, pretty cool."
